Change Behaviors & Avoid Addiction

Certain behaviors put you at a greater risk of becoming addicted to drugs or alcohol and while you cannot change your past, you cannot change your genes and you cannot change your family, you can change your behaviors. By recognizing your behaviors and those that are placing you at an increased risk of addiction, you can make positive changes to prevent the addiction all together.

If you never use drugs or alcohol, then there’s no chance of you becoming addicted. Addiction requires that you use the substance so, the best way to prevent addiction from occurring is to remain abstinent from drugs or alcohol. However, if you are using drugs or alcohol, experimenting with these substances can lead to physical dependence and addiction. If you are already at risk due to family history of addiction or other risk factors, experimenting with drugs or alcohol can greatly increase your risk of becoming addicted. Avoid experimentation to avoid addiction or else you may one day require the help of a treatment center to overcome this disease.

Your friends and family members can also increase your risk of becoming addicted to drugs or alcohol. If you hang around friends or family members who drink excessively or use drugs then you are at risk. You should do you best to stay away from these members of your social network to prevent yourself from falling victim to addiction.

Traumatic experiences, emotions and other feelings can also place you at risk of using drugs or alcohol and becoming addicted. This is especially true if you are using these substances as a way of masking your emotions. You can’t ignore your feelings, you past or the emotions that you have and you definitely can’t mask those feelings by using drugs or alcohol or else you will become addicted.

What to do if you become addicted to drugs or alcohol:

Treatment options are available if you do happen to fall victim to addiction. Inpatient and outpatient treatment centers provide counseling, therapy, and support for those suffering from addiction. These programs can help you get well and once you are out of treatment, you can use the methods above to avoid a future relapse or addiction from occurring.
