Bi-polar disorder is a serious mental illness. This mental disorder is often inappropriately associated with insanity. The person suffering from the bipolar disorder goes through a severe mood swings. Mood swings can be ranging from depressive symptoms to maniac symptoms. The frequent age of onset of Bi-polar disorder is between 20 to 30 years.
The symptoms of Bi-polar disorder are maniac episodes and depressive episodes. The common signs of Mania episodes include increased energy, happiness and restlessness. In this maniac phase, they may display reckless social behavior. They are often extremely irritable and distractible. Individual suffering from depressive phase experiences lasting sadness, emptiness, anxiousness or despair. During this phase person may either sleep too much or not at all. This results in decreased energy level during the day. The most dangerous symptoms of this depressive phase is thoughts of suicide. Depending on these two phases, bi-polar disorder is differentiated into two main types Bi-polar I disorder and Bi-polar II disorder.
This Bi-polar disorder can be cured. However, the psychiatrist and psychologist should first diagnose the disorder. Failure to diagnose and treat this disorder can be fatal. Medication and psychotherapy are effective treatment for bi-polar disorder. Psychotherapy is often used simultaneously with medications. There can be many different patterns to bi-polar treatment. Doctors sometimes use antidepressant medications to treat the depression associated with bi-polar disorder. In addition to treatment, making a few lifestyle changes that can help in reducing the stress can help person to cope up with these hard conditions.
