Effects of alcohol addiction

Alcohol addiction is the most common type of addiction, which has spread across the world and the number of population under alcohol addiction is increasing at an alarming rate. The habit of drinking alcohol is very fatal and therefore it needs to be timely restrained. There are various long term and short-term effects of alcohol addiction. The effect of alcohol largely differs from individuals, depending on their body size, weight, gender and age.

The short-term effects of alcohol addiction are many. The biggest drawback of the alcohol is that, when drunk, it enters the bloodstream of the addict and spreads to all the tissues of the body. Alcohol consumption leads to dizziness, disorientation, fatigue and slurred speech. Larger amounts of alcohol consumption can also lead to loss of sleep, nausea and even vomiting. Alcohol also affects normal judgment and co-ordination ability of a person. People may tend to get very aggressive and can indulge in domestic violence and child abuse.

The long-term effects of excessive alcohol consumption include severe anxiety, hallucinations, and convulsions and may produce withdrawal symptoms. Alcohol consumption when combined with unhealthy eating habits can lead to permanent damage to the vital organs of the body like the liver and the brain. Pregnant women who are under alcohol addiction are at a risk of giving birth to infants that are retarded or other such physical abnormalities. The concerning factor is that all these abnormalities of the infant cannot be reversed.

Moreover, these people are at a greater risk of being influenced by other fatal addictions like the drug addiction and also indulge in creating social crimes. In addiction, to all the above effects of alcohol addiction, it has been studied that the children of the parents with addiction are more prone to become alcoholics in their later life.
