What is addiction?

Addiction is a term that is used to describe a recurring compulsion by the person that engages him in a particular activity, inspite of the harmful consequences to their health and social life. The brain imaging shows that the addiction severely affects the areas of the brain that are responsible for different functions like decision making, behavior control, learning and memory. Thus, people who are addicted exhibit destructive and compulsive behaviors. Addition can be of different types. It may be drug addiction, alcohol addiction, sex addiction, gambling addiction, pornography addiction, etc.

It is demonstrated by the scientific studies that a proper combination of medications, behavioral therapy and group support help the addicted person to travel on the road towards recovery.
